So as some of you know, i’ve had a falling out with my hosting company and i’m going to have to move the whole shebang to a new service. In the past i’ve used Virtual Hosting which means a bunch of customers are all on the same server and we have to live with the same system configuration and features. I’ve decided that i need professional strength options and maximum control, so i’m trying this type of service called VDS or Virtual Dedicated Server.
This new service allows me to have root access and complete control as if i had the server all to myself. In reality there’s still up to 16 people using the same hardware, but through some magic to each of us we look entirely alone and we can do anything we want. The upside to this is that i have tons of control. The downside is i have to install every piece of software that makes up my online empire and make sure that it all works together.
Last night was the first night i took a whack at it, and i decided to start with a bunch of little tools i need and to attack the Apache web-server and WebDAV access. I’m happy to say it didn’t take much time before i saw this:

Not to mention I also got WebDAV and PHP to work too! Next I’ll work on the mail system. That looks like a rats nest of crazy configuration. All so you can change your damn password from web page and set your vacation message. I don’t think Ray was thinking about vacation messages when he “invented email”:http://livinginternet.com/e/ei.htm in 1971.
