With supporters like these...

Saw something interesting on my morning commute - a guy was flying the UN flag from his car. I thought to myself, "Hey, that's cool. I support that."

Only 1 problem - it was regular size. (They apparently don't make UN flags in a plethora of "car friendly" sizes like the US flag.) This guy had it flying from a 10ft pole sticking up out of the driver's side window. I don't know if that was so he could hold onto it or what, but that meant it blocked his view. At each stoplight, it lay directly across the windshield.

He should learn to display it flat on the hood or trunk, like they do during Cinco de Mayo. Or at least get a passenger to hang onto it for him. That would support the UN and carpooling at the same time.

Yeah, Tim and I saw a similar thing on Sunday over on Steven’s Creek (a major retail/commercial road near us, for those of you who don’t live out here). The car in front of us had a full-size American flag sticking out of the sunroof (which is probably a little safer than sticking it out of the driver’s side window).

As it happens, we followed the car through an intersection where a bunch of war supporters were demonstrating. Of course, the guy with the flag got many cheers of approval as he drove through the intersection. Then he made a U-turn on a red light in front of us. I was like, “It’s un-American to disobey traffic laws…ass!” I really yelled that out of Tim’s open car window; the flag guy’s window was also open and I sincerely hoped he heard me (although I’m sure he didn’t).

That had me riled up for a good 15 minutes, in fact. People who cop that “I’m an American — I support our troops! God bless America!” attitude but then go and flaunt the rules (which are part of the reason this country works) when they don’t care to obey them. As if laws only apply selectively. Asses.

(As Tim can attest to, I have some weird, visceral, negative reaction to rampant pro-Americanism. Like, people who have more than one US flag on or in their car really tick me off. As we were trying to find a parking spot at the mall, I kept chanting stuff like “I support jingoism!” and “It’s un-American to stop in the middle of the lane!”)
